Skateboard Deck Grip Tape Designs
What type of skateboard do I have?
Hi I just got a new skateboard from my dad for Christmas and was wondering if you tell me what kind of skateboard I have... the deck's design has Roses and Thorns on it. It also has silver trucks, the grip tape is black, so is the hardware. And the wheels are mint green with i think a skull design on them. I can't post a picture though but if it helps my dad got it at Big Five Sporting Goods. Thanks!!!
All the professional companies plaster their hardware/equipment with their logos. You should easily be able to figure out which deck/components you have if it's a pro-level board. If you need more info, just visit the manufacturer's website. I'm guessing though that if your dad got it from Big 5, it's going to be a recreational level board. It'll be okay to learn on, but once you get better, you're definitely going to need to step up to a pro-level model.
The problem areas I've seen with rec-level boards are super stiff bushings (the cushions in the trucks) that make it virtually impossible to turn and/or adjust the trucks. If that's the case, softer bushings are inexpensive and available at your local skate shop.
Also, thinner metal in the truck baseplate and lower quality steel in the truck parts. Sometimes the bearings and wheels are so bad that it's like skateboarding on erasers--you have to push the board constantly. In that case, you'll need to get good quality bearings and maybe new wheels if they're not compatible.
If you don't have any of those problems, then just go for it. Have fun, ride it till it falls apart!
