Can I hand paint a skateboard with acrylic paints?

Is it possible for me to hand paint a skateboard deck with acrylic paints? I think I would have to use water soluble acrylic paint after I sand down the deck or prepare the deck correctly but I'm not sure which paint to use. Can anyone help? Is there anyone who has tried this and succeeded? and if so how did you protect the art work. I heard slip tape can work. I kinda want this to just be a display but I would like it to also be able to ride.

Also can I buy a plain white deck or just buy a blank one and paint on that without preparing it?

The most durable paint for a skateboard would be enamel paint. It takes longer to dry but it's really tough. Prime the surface with primer first. The other option is to prime the surface after sanding, paint your design with acrylic paint, and when it is totally dry (like overnight) then coat the whole thing with clear polyurethane. Use at least three coats of polyurethane, letting it try totally between each coat. Good luck!! : P
